Obesity - a 21st Century Health Challenge
Obesity is one of the leading public health concerns of 21st century Britain. With our increasingly sedentary lifestyles, variable diets and office working patterns, higher and higher levels of obesity have emerged in the last few decades all over the western world. The UK is no exception.
So just how serious is the problem?
Well, Public Health England give figures that report the percentage of obese men in the UK as increasing from 13% in 1993 to 24% in 2014. By 2050 the prevalence of obesity is predicted to affect 60% of adult men and 50% of adult women.
McKinsey Study on Obesity
A study in 2014 by consulting firm McKinsey and Company revealed that obesity has the second-largest economic impact on the UK behind smoking, generating an annual loss equivalent to 3% of GDP.
