Don’t drink enough water? Not doing 10,000 steps a day? Not going to the gym regularly?
Many people see getting healthy as a long term, difficult project. This long-term change can be operating in the background. But in the meantime…there is the Health Hack!
Don’t worry! Health hacks are there to help you on your way.
Health hacks are quick changes that just about anyone can do, that can make a world of difference to your health. They are little tricks that are small short-cuts to a healthier life.
Below is a list of 10 health hacks, that you can do today; simple things to help you to be a little healthier:
Health Hack # 1 – Eat mindfully.
Eating mindfully means eating slowly, and tasting every bite. If you are used to eating your dinner at a rapid pace, then try just eating a whole meal at half pace – and see what happens. You might even actually taste food for the first time…
Health Hack # 2 – Take care of your eyes by following the 20/20/20 rule –
Staring at computers all day can strain and damage our eyes. The 20/20/20 rule reduces this – Every 20 minutes, take a 20 second break, and Let your eyes wander over something 20ft in the distance. (Buzzfeed)
Health Hack # 3 – Meditate -
The physical and mental health benefits of meditation are proved by science, and are well known. Find some time in the morning or evening to sit and just be. Many people are evangelical about meditation, saying it genuinely changed their lives. You could be among them!
Health Hack # 4 - If you catch the train or bus to work, get off a stop early and walk –
A great micro-exercise-hack. You could get in an extra few hundred steps every day this way.
Health Hack # 5 - Try an exercise class –
Brilliant idea if you’re not great on the gym machines. Try partnering up with a friend, so you can spur each other on. Spinning classes at the gym are often full, so you may need to book in advance.
Health Hack # 6 – Substitute cinnamon in your coffee
Rather than cream and sugar, try cinnamon for a flavourful kick to your coffee. Every Starbucks has some. Not only does it have fewer calories than your typical cream, but cinnamon also has numerous health benefits: It can reduce triglycerides, LDL (i.e., bad) cholesterol, and blood sugar levels. Health hack # 7 - Stay hydrated.
Drinking plenty of water has a surprising amount of scientifically proven benefits. It promotes weight loss by lowering your total energy intake and improving metabolism.
Health Hack # 8 - If you can’t take at least 10,000 steps every day. . .
Put down the pedometer and start the stopwatch. You can reap the same health benefits by counting minutes instead
Can you manage three 10-minute brisk walks a day? In a Norwegian study, older men who did precisely that six days a week cut their risk of dying of any cause during the study period by 40 percent. (Men’s Health)
Some criticise Health Hacks as “cheap tricks” or “poor replacements” for the real changes we all need to make. Our view? They are actually a brilliant way for short cutting the health process, and getting us a “leg-up” in our diet and exercise lives.
In many people’s experience, big, sweeping life changes are harder to sustain in the long term than small, continuous movements in the right direction. These can really make up a meaningful difference in us in order to give us what we need - long, healthy lives.
