Here's Lucie's Health Insurance story.

"I prolapsed a disc at L5-S1 on a boat in Majorca. It hugely affected my life and I couldn't do day-to-day things.

I couldn't exercise and walking was painful because I had sciatic pain all down my leg. I couldn't lift anything, it made me really sad because I couldn't do my job. I couldn't do menial tasks that I would normally do everyday."

When Did You Get A Health Insurance Policy?

“I've had Bupa my whole life, I've been really lucky. My dad was in the RAF and he had a policy through the RAF, and then as we've got older, my brother and I have taken on our own policies.

I will keep a health insurance policy now for life because it's been so valuable for my healthcare and fixing me when I needed it."

How Did Your Policy Support You?

"Bupa were really good from the start, I went to see the GP and they sent me to see a physio who told me my back was just in spasm. I then went to see my own chiropractor and he sent me to see a consultant.

I rang Bupa and said I've been referred by my chiropractor and they took the verbal referral. I was then able to choose the consultant I wanted to go and see, at the hospital I wanted to see him at, so it was convenient for me and I was able to see the secretary straight away and get an appointment.

I was able to then see the consultant, he suggested a few routes and it was really good that the hospital has amazing nurses, it's quite a small hospital where they don't actually see NHS patients.

I was really well cared for, it was a really good experience and they were at the end of the phone if things did go wrong following the operation.

I did have a bit of a reaction to some drugs so we were able to call them at 2am and speak to someone and they were able to fix it for me. That side of things was all really good.

The other thing with Bupa which has been amazing was that before I had my fusion, I wanted to be triple sure that it was the right thing to do.

I asked Bupa if I could have a second opinion, so I changed consultant and went to a different one who had been recommended. This was at a different hospital, with lovely staff where I felt really well cared for and the second consultant was also really professional. He agreed that I did need my back fused, so after three years with a lot of disruption in my life I finally had the fusion.

I stayed in The Manor Hospital in Oxford for six nights following my surgery and they were fantastic with physios and the nurses, consultants and anaesthetists. Everything that came with the stay in hospital was brilliant.

I am living my best life, I am pain free and I am able to exercise again and I've got my life back thanks to Bupa."

How Else Have You Used Your Health Insurance Policy?

"I've used my policy for my back, my knees and my ankle. I have a genetic problem in my knee so I actually grow cartilage.

I've had that cleaned out three times now and touch wood it seems to be fixed. I also injured my ankle when out riding and I had my ankle fixed with steroid through Bupa."

How Did Health Insurance Make a Difference?

"I know someone who had a similar injury to mine and they are not lucky enough to have PMI. Unfortunately for them they have been palmed off quite a lot by the NHS as it's not considered an emergency injury.

They have now had it injected three years later, they've had one injection within the three years they've been suffering. Whenever they go back to the NHS, they say there is nothing more they can do and they'll be on a long list of waiting for the next stage.

For me, waiting for the NHS would have wrecked my life, I couldn't have lived with what I was going through and not being able to exercise and just having to sit and lie down. I found I was putting on weight and it was really getting me down not being able to do day-to-day things. "

What Is Your Advice To Someone considering Private Health Insurance?

"Get a policy as quick as you can. It might seem like a lot of money at the time, but when something goes wrong and you are faced with months and months of waiting through the NHS, or the GP can't see you, you can ring up Bupa and have a private GP consultation on the phone these days."

It's just reassurance that they are there if you need them and if you need to see a consultant for a leg, a shoulder, your heart or cancer. For anything, they are there at the drop of a hat and you can get an appointment normally within the first month."
