      Top Frequently Asked Questions

      • Can I get cover if I have pre-existing conditions?

It is still possible to take out private medical insurance with a pre-existing condition but that particular condition would not be covered initially. Pre-existing conditions are illnesses or injuries you have had symptoms, treatment, medication or advice for already, so it would be like taking out car insurance after you crashed and expecting it to pay out. However, it’s only that particular condition, which you are already suffering from that wouldn’t be covered, any other new conditions would be. There’s also a chance the pre-existing condition could be eligible for cover again in the future, if you go a few years free of symptoms, treatment, medication or advice.

      • Can I get PMI cover for my whole family?

Yes, you can absolutely get cover for the whole family. It is possible to take out a family policy, which can cover the whole family on one policy. Alternatively, you can cover everyone separately on individual policies, or a mixture of both. It will depend on your individual circumstances what will be the best for you. Our advisers can talk you through the best options to suit you.

      • What are the different types of underwriting?

There are three types of underwriting, Full Medical Underwriting, Moritorium Underwriting and Continuation of Cover from a previous policy. Different underwriting may suit you depending on your circumstances and your adviser will be able to guide you to the most suitable.

      • If I already have a policy, can I change providers?

Yes it is absolutely possible to switch providers if your current policy is no longer meeting your needs. We would recommend a full review at every renewal period to make sure you still have the benefits and premium to suit you. Our advisers will be able to do this for you and make any recommendations. If a change is the right thing for you they will be able to manage all the arrangements for you.

      • Why speak to an adviser on the phone?

Health insurance is a complex product with lots of moving parts. Unlike motor or home insurance it’s not as simple as getting a quote online. Talking to an adviser on the phone makes the process much more straightforward for you and gives you the peace of mind that you have the cover you’re looking for.

      • Can I get cover for cancer treatment should I be diagnosed?

Health Insurance gives you access to the latest cancer treatment, as well as medication and procedures that don’t tend to be obtainable on the NHS. Private cancer care is intended to make your treatment as comfortable as possible by making chemotherapy at home an option, along with home nursing.

      • How can I pay the premium?

Your premium can be paid on a monthly or annual payment plan. The most common way to pay is by direct debit – this method is accepted by all our insurers. Some of our insurers also accept payment by BACS and annual payment by cheque.

      • Can I cancel the policy?

All insurers have a “cooling off period” usually between 14 and 30 days, allowing you to cancel your policy and any monies debited will be fully refunded. Should you choose to cancel outside of the 'cooling off period', you will need to notify us and we will be able to assist you from there.

      • Does PMI cover the treatment of Coronavirus?

Coronavirus is a public health emergency, therefore it is appropriate that the diagnostics and treatment of the virus is conducted by the NHS. Some policies however do offer cash benefits for hospital stays, some of which have been improved upon during the current pandemic.

      • Will I receive the same cancer drugs as I would on the NHS?

The treatment given to you will depend on the cancer you are diagnosed with and what your specialist recommends. Private Health Insurance can give you access to drugs that have proven effective but are not yet available on the NHS.
