Why Did You Choose Private Health Insurance?

“I wanted to have peace of mind that I would be able to access private healthcare as and when I needed it. 

I had health complications earlier this year which left me with major pain in my back. I found it really difficult to walk, I had numbness down the tops of my legs and felt very uncomfortable.

It was painful and I couldn't do anything. I'd gone from playing netball to finding it hard to even get out of bed."

How Have NHS Waiting Times Impacted You?

"Wait times were a factor, but one of the key issues was getting access to the services themselves. For example, GPs are no longer able to refer people for MRI scans and it's almost impossible to get physio on the NHS.

For me private healthcare was important in giving me access to spinal physiotherapy, which was recommended after an MRI scan at A&E." 

How Did Accessing Physiotherapy Benefit You?

"I didn't want to rely on taking pain relief for the rest of my life. I was very conscious that the pain relief that I was prescribed was something that I wanted to be temporary, I needed to make my body stronger so that I didn't have to rely on it.

Physiotherapy was important in making sure I was doing all of the right exercises in my personal training sessions to ensure I was building the muscles that would support my back and enable me to wean myself off amitriptyline and co-codamol. That took a couple of months but was really beneficial and I'm happy to say that I'm no longer taking pain relief and I feel so much better in my body.

I'm not yet back to running or playing netball, but I'm fully functioning otherwise.

Having access to proper medical guidance and support enabled me to literally get back on my feet in months rather than years or longer."

How Else Have You Used Your Health Insurance Policy?

"My son was at primary school and would suffer from headaches and be violently ill. I was really concerned about this, and at that age they can't really describe fully what their issues are.

Through my private health insurance policy I was able to access a paediatric consultant within two weeks. He did a full diagnostic on my son and fortunately was able to say that he was okay and would probably grow out of the migraines. 

Having that reassurance really was so important for peace of mind and for ensuring that he was okay."

How Has Having Health Insurance Provided Peace of Mind? 

"It's been hugely reassuring for all of us. I think as a parent it's been reassuring that my children are covered and will be seen quickly. But also as someone in their early 50s, it's really reassuring to know that I have the medical support that I will need to make sure that I am able to be as fit, healthy and active as I can be for the rest of my life.

I think having private health insurance is an individual decision. For me, I've gone for a healthcare option that suits us. It isn't the high end, but it covers the basics and it covers them well. It also gives us the access that we want and are looking for.

For me, I think health insurance is really important."
