Here's Rachel's story of how her health insurance policy helped her when injured.

How have you used Private Health Insurance?

“I sought help for my shoulder after playing badminton. When I was young, I used to play badminton a lot. I’d taken a break for about 20 years, I went out to play, jumped on the court and started running around like I was 16 years old, however, whilst smashing the shuttlecock I hurt my shoulder.

I went to see my physio, and he diagnosed that I probably had a frozen shoulder, after I had been suffering with this pain for about four or five months. He referred me to my doctor, I went to see my doctor, and she referred me to see an orthopaedic surgeon.

That’s where my private health insurance came in, it is something that I’ve had for a really long time. Private healthcare is really important to me, I first started taking it out when I was about 20 years old.

It’s important for me as I want to be able to get stuff fixed when there is a problem, I really value what the NHS does, but running a busy business, I need the convenience of being able to get help when I need it. So it was really brilliant that I had private healthcare to address my shoulder.

I booked in at a local surgery close to me. I was referred by my physio to a great consultant, I saw him within a couple of weeks of being referred. He diagnosed my problem and scheduled a procedure around three or four weeks later.

Once that procedure happened, it was a short one hour procedure – a day case appointment, the day after my procedure I could suddenly do the YMCA! I could raise my arms and hands in a way that I couldn’t have done previously. I was really pleased with the procedure. I followed up with physio and it’s all fixed now.

I probably won’t be going back on the badminton court, I’ll probably keep it safe, but I’m really pleased that thanks to my private healthcare insurance I was able to get this problem solved."

How did having frozen shoulder affect you?

"Having frozen shoulder really was problematic for me. Of course, in the scheme of things it’s not the most catastrophic injury, but day-to-day pain, restriction of mobility and being able to get things done and even sleeping, it was a real problem.

It was getting me down, so I was really pleased that I was able to get it fixed in a way that suited me and get access to some really good healthcare, and get it fixed pretty much straight away."

Is Private Health Insurance worth it?

"Deciding the right healthcare solution for you is a real personal choice, depending on your factor... I can’t speak for everybody, but for me personally, being able to see the person I want to see at the time that suits me and the locations that’s best for my schedule and everything going on is a really important factor.

For me, it’s essential to know that it’s there and gives me the peace of mind that if I do have a problem, I’ve got a better chance of getting it fixed in a way that’s going to work with everything else that I’ve got going on in my life."
