Established in 1988 as General and Medical Finance Ltd, the company initially offered finance and Insurance services to UK medical and other professionally qualified clients. General & Medical Securities Ltd was founded in the 1990s to become the parent company of the group. General and Medical Insurance Ltd was launched in 2006 to underwrite the majority of the medical insurance products sold in the UK by the General & Medical Group.

General & Medical Everyday Core Cover

Included as a base to your cover with Everday are the following benefits.

Benefit Details
In-patient and day patient treatment

Including hospital fees, consultants’ fees, diagnostic tests, MRI, CT, PET scans and physiotherapy.

Out-patient cover

Initial and subsequent MRI, CT and PET scans up to £500. Complementary therapies up to £250.
Treatment for cardiovascular conditions up to £250.
Mental Health counselling and therapy.

Cancer Cover

Treatment for Cancer whether or not relating to an inpatient admission, up to £5,000 rolling up to £25,000 after 5 continuous years membership with no related claims. 

 External Prosthesis relating to a claim for cancer up to £5,000.

NHS Cash Benefit Claim a cash benefit of £250 for up to 30 nights when you receive treatment on the NHS.
Home Nursing

Sometimes patients still need nursing once they leave hospital. So, if required, home nursing is made available to in-patients & day-patients following treatment, up to a limit of £1,500.

Maternity

Cover includes complications of Pregnancy (defined conditions only)

Additional optional extras are available to enhance your policy to suit your individual requirements:

Enhanced Mental Health Support

While standard cover includes some counselling, you can upgrade your policy to include more comprehensive mental health treatment for diagnosed psychiatric conditions. 

Pre-existing Conditions Cover

Most policies exclude pre-existing conditions, however, you can choose to add cover for up to two defined pre-existing conditions. 

This is subject to an annual limit of £1,000 per condition, rolling up to £10,000 after 10 continuous years membership with no related claims.

Multi-Trip Travel Cover

You can add multi-trip travel cover for up to 180 days in any policy year for up to 90 days per trip. Covers trips within Europe or worldwide (including or excluding the USA and Canada). With an additional upgrade option to include cruises, golf and business travel.

 

What isn't covered?

Like most leading insurers, General & Medical Everyday  insurance is intended to cover acute conditions as opposed to chronic conditions, such as diabetes. All exclusions will be listed in your policy documents. As standard, General & Medical does not cover:

  • Treatment for Alcoholism or Substance addiction
  • Chronic long-term conditions
  • Pregnancy and Fertility
  • Kidney Dialysis
  • Cosmetic Surgery
  • Major Organ Transplants
  • Pre-existing conditions

Underwriting Options

There are four underwriting options available to you with General & Medical's Everyday policy.

  • Full Medical Underwriting where you disclose your medical history to General & Medical.
  • Standard Moratorium where you don’t have to disclose any medical history until you make a claim.
  • Continued Personal Medical Exclusions where you switch cover and carry any current personal medical exclusions which apply to the existing policy across to a new policy.
  • Continued Moratorium If you have moratorium underwriting and want to switch provider keeping the original moratorium start date in place.

Excess Options

General & Medical's excess options range from £0 to £3,000. You can choose to either pay one excess once per policy year, or to pay an excess per claim The excess options you choose will impact the premium you pay – the higher your excess, the lower the premium you pay will be.

£150, £250, £500, £1,000, £2,000 and £3,000. 

Hospital Lists

As a Everyday member you can choose from four options:

Guided Care which is a lower cost alternative to having a hospital list. If you make a
claim, General & Medical will purposefully select the most suitable hospitals and facilities for your treatment.

First Choice includes select group of private hospitals and clinics at locations throughout the UK, including London, with whom General & Medical have close association.

Freedom includes all First Choice facilities and offers additional facilities throughout the UK. These are mainly NHS hospitals with private facilities attached.

Premium which includes premium hospitals which are specialist facilities.

What are General & Medicals excess options?

General & Medical's excess options range from £0 to £3,000. The excess is only to be paid once per year, meaning you can have multiple claims but only pay your excess once. The excess options you choose will impact the premium you pay – the higher your excess, the lower the premium you pay will be.

Can I still use the NHS if I have health insurance with General & Medical?

Yes! The NHS is available to all UK citizens with or without insurance. Any treatment for pre-existing and chronic conditions will still be treated by the NHS, as well as any emergencies.

 

Can I choose where I am treated?

When setting up your policy with General & Medical, you will be able to choose from four hospital lists: Guided Care, First Choice, Freedom and Premium. This choice will impact the facilities at which you can be treated aswell as the premium you pay.

 

Do I need health insurance?

We are blessed in the UK to have a National Health Service, so health insurance is not a legal requirement. Health insurance provides the peace of mind however that should you require treatment you can access private health services and avoid NHS waiting times.
